Idaho State Bengals Head Coach Gretchen Maloney announced on Apr. 2 the signing of Scarlett Matthews, who will join the women’s tennis team for the 2026–27 season.

Matthews, from London, England, brings international experience to Idaho State. The announcement is significant as it adds depth and talent to the Bengals’ roster ahead of future competitions.

Maloney said, “Delighted to have Scarlett Matthews join us next season. Her work ethic and dedication to the game will fit nicely into our culture. Her aggressive style of play, and her great footwork will also be a nice addition. She is also really sound technically and we look forward to seeing how her game fits into college tennis.”

Matthews attended Queenswood and has represented Team England at the World Championships in Bahrain where she finished fourth with her team. She helped secure two consecutive national school championships for her squad and reached a junior ITF doubles final.

Standing at 5-foot-8, Matthews plans to major in economics at Idaho State University. She cited both the team’s competitive spirit and positive environment as reasons for choosing Idaho State.

Matthews is set to enter as a freshman in fall 2026 and becomes the third member of Idaho State’s incoming class for that academic year.
