The Idaho State Bengals softball team lost the final game of their series against the Sacramento State Hornets 8-7 in extra innings on April 18 at Miller Ranch Stadium. Despite coming back from a six-run deficit, the Bengals were unable to secure a sweep as the Hornets scored twice in the eighth inning to take the win. Idaho State won the series overall 2-1 and now holds an 8-4 record heading into their last regular season matchup against Montana.
The upcoming series with Montana is significant as both teams are tied at 8-4 in conference play. The winner of next week’s best-of-three set in Missoula will be crowned Big Sky regular-season champion, adding high stakes to what is expected to be a competitive showdown.
Saturday’s contest saw early dominance by Sacramento State, who scored six runs in the first inning. The Bengals responded gradually, scoring once in the third and two more times in the fifth before tying it up with three runs in the sixth inning. Although Idaho State managed another run late, they left runners stranded and ultimately fell short.
The game also marked Senior Day for Idaho State, honoring eight players for their contributions over their collegiate careers. Alyssa Yee was recognized as one of program’s most decorated athletes with a .362 batting average and ranking among leaders in hits and doubles. Ava Brown was noted for her power hitting with 52 career home runs—second all-time at Idaho State—and being named Big Sky Most Valuable Player in 2025.
Other seniors honored included Olivia Robison, Kennedy Dudley, Jaden Moore, Sydney Groves—who hit her 50th career home run this season—Kasey Aguinaga (Big Sky Pitcher of the Year for 2025), and Riley Wickum who finished among program leaders for pitching appearances and innings pitched.
Looking ahead, first pitch for Saturday’s opening game against Montana is scheduled for April 25 at 1:00 PM Mountain Time.
