Idaho State men’s basketball Head Coach Ryan Looney announced on May 18 the addition of Cam Flabel to the Bengals’ coaching staff as an assistant coach.
Flabel, who is an Idaho State University alumnus and native of Boise, returns to Pocatello after five seasons with the Hawai’i Pacific University men’s basketball program. He most recently served as Associate Head Coach at Hawai’i Pacific.
“Cam is a great addition to our staff,” Looney said. “His passion and energy are contagious. Cam has gotten great experience the past five years. He is an ISU alum… We are bringing one of our own back.”
Flabel previously worked as a student manager for Idaho State before earning his bachelor’s degree in marketing and management from the university. He then moved into coaching roles at Hawai’i Pacific, starting as a graduate assistant in 2021 and rising to Associate Head Coach by 2024.
“Going from Pocatello to Hawai’i and now back home to Idaho State makes this a truly special, full-circle moment for me,” Flabel said. “As an ISU alum, I’m incredibly grateful to Coach Looney for this opportunity and excited to pour everything I have into a program and community that helped shape me. Go Bengals!”
During his tenure at Hawai’i Pacific, Flabel contributed to several team achievements including helping secure an NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship berth in the 2025-26 season and leading defensive efforts that ranked first in their conference for rebounding during the 2024-25 season. He also co-founded a mentorship program connecting student-athletes with local elementary schools.
The move brings Flabel back into familiar territory where he began his collegiate playing career at Rocky Mountain College before transitioning into management and coaching roles.
