Idaho State University’s men’s basketball team started their Big Sky Conference schedule with a strong offensive showing, defeating Sacramento State 97–84 at Reed Gym. The Bengals’ 97 points were their highest total against a Division I opponent since they scored 101 against Montana State in March 2018. The game also marked season highs for Idaho State in points, assists, and steals.
From the beginning of the game, Idaho State showed energy and balance on offense. Head coach Ryan Looney said after the game that the Bengals “did a great job staying together and being unselfish,” highlighting the team’s approach throughout the night.
The first half saw Idaho State establish an early rhythm through solid guard play and inside scoring. Sacramento State kept the score close for much of the half, but Idaho State entered halftime ahead by nine points after capitalizing on turnovers and free throws.
In the second half, Idaho State increased its lead with effective three-point shooting and rebounding. Each attempt by Sacramento State to close the gap was met by a quick response from Idaho State. Coach Looney described this stretch as crucial: the Bengals “trusted the game plan and executed it on the floor,” which helped them build a comfortable lead.
Key performances came from several players. Jamison Guerra led all scorers with a career-high 24 points and added six assists. Afterward, Guerra said, “when we’re sharing the ball and trusting each other, our offense opens up and everyone benefits.” Senior captain Connor Hollenbeck contributed 16 points along with two rebounds and three assists while playing multiple defensive roles. Evan Otten had seven points, eight rebounds, three blocks, and altered several shots on defense.
Lachlan Brewer scored a career-high 18 points against his former team, including four three-pointers after halftime that helped Idaho State pull away. Martin Kheil finished with five points, four rebounds, two steals, and one assist.
Off the bench, Caleb Van De Griend recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds while also adding four assists. Blake Daberkow scored a season-high 10 points on efficient shooting. Daberkow credited his teammates’ confidence: “just kept attacking and playing free, knowing we had each other’s backs.” Additional contributions came from Cheikh Sow, Gus Etchison, and Louis Bond.
As a team, Idaho State shot nearly 50 percent from the field (49.2%), made almost half their three-point attempts (46.7%), and hit over 70 percent of their free throws (70.4%). They collected 38 rebounds compared to Sacramento State’s 35; had more assists (19 to 7); more steals (9 to 6); and committed fewer turnovers (10 to Sacramento’s 12).
With this win in their conference opener, Idaho State moves to 1–0 in Big Sky play.
