BigSkyMBB Weekly Notebook: Postseason Edition
Postseason basketball is revving up, and the Big Sky Conference will have four teams continuing their seasons this week, highlighted by the No. 14-seeded Montana State Bobcats taking their talents to San Diego to square off against the No. 3-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders.
New & Noteworthy
- The Bobcats of Montana State secured their spot in the NCAA Tournament as they claimed the Big Sky Conference Championship Tournament title on Saturday against Northern Colorado. This marks their first trip to the Big Dance since 1996, when head coach and Big Sky Coach of the Year Danny Sprinkle was a student-athlete.
- MSU was also the Big Sky’s Regular Season Champion, a feat they hadn’t accomplished in 20 seasons.
- The Bobcats will be seeking the Big Sky’s first NCAA Tournament victory since 2006 when No. 12-seeded Montana knocked off No. 5-seeded Nevada.
- MSU’s roster features the Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year and a unanimous First Team All-Big Sky selection in Jubrile Belo, who was a matchup nightmare across the board all season long for opposing Big Sky teams.
- Montana State’s opponent, Texas Tech, has a familiar name on their coaching staff in Barret Peery. He was the head coach at Portland State before taking his current position and played college basketball at Southern Utah University.
- Xavier Bishop was named Tournament MVP for the Bobcats, after dropping 19 points in the championship game. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by his teammate Amin Adamu, along with Daylen Kountz (Northern Colorado), Khalid Thomas (Portland State), Dillon Jones (Weber State) and Bryce Fowler (Sacramento State).
- Kountz (First Team), Belo (Second Team), Jones (Second Team) and Koby McEwen (Second Team) were all named to the NABC All-District teams on Tuesday, nothing them as some of the top players in the entire region.
- The Bears of Northern Colorado will continue their season at the Roman College Basketball Invitational (CBI) hosted in Daytona Beach, Florida. UNC will be the No. 12 seed and play No. 5-seeded Florida Atlantic at 12:30 p.m. MT on Sunday, March 20. The first round and quarterfinals will air on FloHoops.
- Both Southern Utah and Eastern Washington have accepted bids to play in The Basketball Classic, with the Thunderbirds hosting and game and the Eagles heading out on the road. SUU will host Kent State on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. MT, which will air live on ESPN+ inside the America First Event Center in Cedar City. EWU will travel to Fresno, California to face off against the Bulldogs of Fresno State. Their game on Thursday evening will tip-off at 8 p.m. MT. The game will also air on ESPN+.
